Stor-Elvdal Municipality is located in the heart of Østerdalen, midway between Oslo and Trondheim. Norwegian National Road no. 3 – Østerdalsveien – is currently the fastest road connection between the two cities.
Norwegian national roads also go from Atna via Folldal to Dovre and over Ringebufjellet to Gudbrandsdalen. The railway line provides good train connections to Hamar, Gardermoen and Oslo, and to Trondheim via Røros.
The municipality has a population of around 2700, of which about two-thirds live in the municipal and trade centre Koppang, which has schools, kindergartens, a medical centre, cafés, a bank and a wide variety of businesses to serve most requirements.
Full kindergarten coverage, a good school provision and varied recreational options provide good growing up conditions in Stor-Elvdal. The municipality has an upper secondary school and the Faculty of Forestry and Wildlife Management at Hedmark University College is located on the banks of the Glomma River at Evenstad.
Stor-Elvdal has a broad business community including Moelven Østerdalsbruket, Ringnes, Imsdal, several craft businesses and a good range of shops. With more than 2300 cabins, Stor-Elvdal is a major cabin municipality and has attractive areas of mountain cabins in several mountain areas throughout the municipality.
Rich cultural life and wonderful nature. Stor-Elvdal has a rich cultural life and can entice people with its own sports centre – recreation club, gym – cinema, cultural centre and sports hall. The varied landscape of forests, mountains, lakes and rivers invites hunting, fishing and various types of outdoor recreation.
The mountain village of Sollia is the Gateway to the Rondane mountains and is part of the National Tourist Route.
